Cape Town and Leeds Universities Partnership

A new transcontinental research project is looking at the way technology is affecting traditional campus-based degrees.

As digital technology continues to influence and “disrupt” how students learn and are taught, the research by the Universities of Leeds and Cape Town (UCT) will examine its effect on staff, students and employers.

The research is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the National Research Foundation and is one of five collaborative research projects about higher education in South Africa. It will take place over 26 months. The amount of funding granted is £494K by the ESRC in the UK, plus R2 158 000 by the National Research Foundation in South Africa.

NSFAS 2016 Fund Distribution

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will on Thursday host a briefing detailing how 2016's funding will be distributed.

The Department of Higher Education released an additional R6.9 billion to make up for the shortfall this academic year.

On Wednesday, Vice-Chancellors, NSFAS leadership and the Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande met to discuss their funding issues and disruptions at several universities across the country.

Education in South Africa

All South Africans have the right to a basic education, including adult basic education and further education.

 

According to the Bill of Rights of the country's Constitution, the state has an obligation, through reasonable measures, to progressively make this education available and accessible.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of public investment in education in the world.

At about 7% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 20% of total state expenditure, the government spends more on education than on any other sector.

Decade of the Artisan

SABC Education fully embraces and adopts the Decade of the Artisan programme which was launched by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in January 2014.

The programme is a strategic vehicle for poverty alleviation through agrarian unemployment reduction as prescribed in the National Development Plan.

Expansion of sustainable job opportunities for South African school leavers and the current unemployed citizens is at the fore-front of government’s priorities, thus the Decade of the Artisan programme is pivotal to the attainment of government’s goals.

There is a continuous need to produce qualified artisans to sustain industries and support economic growth within South Africa. In a range of national strategies the need for artisans has been elevated and identified as a priority area for skills development.

The National Development Plan states that the country should be producing 30 000 qualified artisans per year by 2030. At present, we are producing on average 13 000 qualified artisans per year and therefore the number has to more than double in the next seventeen years leading up to 2030.

This book, therefore, seeks to encourage young people to consider taking up careers along technical and artisanal skills.

Issued: 23 January 2014 - The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mduduzi, Manana, MP, in partnership with key partners in the higher education landscape, will officially launch the Decade of the Artisan Programme following the success of last year’s Decade of the Artisan Programme.

The Decade of the Artisan campaign, which will commence in 2014 until 2014, seeks to promote artisanry as a career of choice to South Africa’s youth within the post school education and training system as well as to highlight skills development opportunities that are available in artisanry. Following the official launch of The Year of the Artisan campaign by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Blade Nzimande in February 2013.
